First, it is pretty difficult to stop people from doing what they want to do when they have reached the age of 21. As his parent, you are naturally concerned about his ability to travel safely. Depending on his experience, level of maturity, problem solving ability and financial means to travel independantly, you might want to take time with him going over a number of things, such as 1 Has he the financial means to travel to Thailand? 2. Has he done some research on travel there, customs, lodging, safety, etc.? 3. Has he found a safe, reliable, affordable place to stay? 4. Does he plan to travel with a buddy and if not, how will he keep in contact with you while he is there?
If you feel reasonably confident that he can finance his trip and make good choices while he is away, then give him your blessing, encourage him to learn as much as he can. Travelling is an enriching experience for anyone and particularly the young.

If he can afford it and wants to then he should. My cousin Mike spent 3 months out there a few years ago and my good friend Gary just got back from a month there.
I myself have never been to Thailand, I have been to Malaysia which is a great place and well worth seeing. Perhaps he shuld consider traveling about South East Asia as he will see more than just one country that way. If you are travelling thousands of miles you should see as much as possible.
Perhaps he should take a good, and sensible, friend with him. Lots of things are more funand safer with two people than alone. Anyway he should certainly go if health and finances permit - travel is a lot of fun and a great way to learn about people.

YES YES YES - he will have the time of his life.

If you're paying, then I'd suggest you find out as much as you can so you know what you're paying for... and then you can insist he goes to certain places, that way you'll be sure he get's the most out of it - as well as spending time on great beaches and partying of course!

Make sure he reads the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet Thailand and takes a decent guidebook with him...

He should stay in hostels to meet other people and have the best time.

See my links below for the best places to stay and to ask more questions use the Loney Planet Thorntree.

Hope that helps

Why not? What is your concern about going there? You didn't really explain why you asked this question.

He is 21 - he can take care of himself. BUT - Do research so he know what to expect. Remember that it is a different country and there will be culture shock and a few things he needs to know about how life operates over there. DO NOT expect things to be the same as in your country. Good manners and respect are REALLY important there.

Yeah he will have a great time. Why wouldnt you let him go. It will be an experience of a life time.
I would suggest that he reads up on the areas that he wants to visit and understands the culture a little before going.

How long is he planning on going there for?

There is loads to see and do and plenty of like minded people there to meet.

He is 21 so i think he is smart enough to taking care of himself. I'm a girl and I started to traveling by myself when i was 21 and I'm doing OK,...nothing to worry about he will enjoy it.

Who is paying for the trip? Make him work for it and he will appreciate the value of life more.
