Because people believe all the lies in The Witches Hammer (written in the 15th century) without ever bothering to find out where those beliefs come from. Most people who swear witches (which most Wiccans are) consort with the Devil haven't even heard of The Witches Hammer, let alone what it is, why it was written, and what it was used for.

The only reason it is socially bad is due to much of our society being fundamentalist Christian. With that belief system in place, many do not understand Wicca and consider it to be devil worship, satanical and go around burning people as witches. Due to lack of knowledge and ignorance and general lack of respect for other belief systems than Christian, it is hard to socially be anything that is not Christian in a Christan controlled society.

It depends on your society whether they consider it bad. Some social groups consider being too religious socially bad. Some social groups consider being over-educated socially bad. Some think not being able to consistently capitalize or spell is a social blunder :-)
Realize that society is rarely completely right, and forge on.

Humans naturally fear and are suspicious of things they don't understand. It's an instinct that seeks to protect us from potential harm, but it also leads people to act out of fear. This fear is based on ignorance and can be overcome by educating oneself about the new person, idea, or thing. This is what most of us did when we first encountered Wicca; we asked questions, satisfied ourselves as to what Wicca is all about, and overcame our concerns. Unfortunately, some religious scriptures include writings that discourage people from seeking the truth. These scriptures make it seem that ignorance is a virtue and teach believers to automatically oppose any idea that differs from their own doctrines and condemn any person who believes differently than they are instructed to. This is why some religious people refuse to look past their preconceptions of Wicca as devil worship or a devious satanic plot to undermine the "true" faith.

A WHO? Being Wiccan isn't "socially bad" unless the "society" you're referring to is a judgemental one.

It's Not. Just because Christians think they have the market cornered on Religion, doesn't mean they do.
