I wouldn't call it a "sweet 16" even though he may be very sweet and is turning 16. Boys don't generally want to be referred to as "Sweet" lol. But I think you're on the right track. If he's very shy I wouldn't make it a surprise because he may feel uncomfortable. I am a shy person to the point of pain at times and I wouldn't like that. How about the two of you pick out who is invited and go from there? You could go out to a fancy dinner, a movie, an amusement park, a picnic, renting movies, have a few friends sleep over, or whatever it is that he's into. Muesums, art galleries? Or you could have a theme party. What does he like? Comic books [come as your favorite comic book hero], Reading? [bring your favorite book as a gift], sports [bring sports memobilla as a gift] or anything else he may like. I think you are a great parent to want to do this for him! He's a very lucky young man.

Tell you son you want to do something special to celebrate his 16th birthday and maybe give him a few ideas as to what kinds of things you would be willing to do. Let him have some choice. You might come up with some ideas that are comparable in cost, like the party, buying him a car, a vacation, whatever it is that you are willing to do and afford.
Some of these 16 parties that they show on Mtv seem like a complete show of excess to me. I don't think the kids appreciate what they have in life. They are all about show. Just my 2 cents. I know you didn't ask for it.
If you son is not outgoing, as cool as a party sounds to you, he may not be into it. It may cause him stress. Give him some options.

If he's a bit shy then why would you want to torture him on his birthday? That's kind of cruel. Not all kids enjoy parties.
Why don't you just ask him what he wants to do? Tell him that this is a special birthday and you want him to have a wonderful day and ask him what it would make for him to be happy. It could even be that he'd rather go on a trip, say to Hawaii or somewhere if you can afford it. Just remember, that you have the 18th to get through then the 21st. Don't do something that you can't out surpass for those special birthday's.

I've never heard of a boy having a Sweet 16 party. A regular surprise party would most likely be fine.

If he's not that outgoing...you might not get the reaction you're looking for. Even though your heart might be in the right place, it might not be what he wants. In a situation like that, if I had a child who was more anti-social than social, I'd either: A: Invite only close friends I know he feels comfortable with. Or B: Discuss with him what he really might want for his 16th birthday. It may not be a surprise, but at least he gets what he really wants, y'know? Hope that helps. ^^

dont' make it a surprise. if he's not that outgoing let him help you plan things. if he only has a few close friends maybe try talking to him about renting a limo with pizza and pop and movies or something. that would be a cool fun unique thing to do. it's what i wanted, but i got stuck at the KENNEDY SPACE CENTER in florida on my 16th birthday. i hated it.

Sure but make sure you invite the people he likes and not everyone. Since hes not that outgoing hes just going to want his close friends and family. You said you got him a car already, so if you want to buy him a gift, try to find out something he really wants.

Just ask him first. I have never heard of a sweet 16 party for a boy. You don't want to embarrass him . If he isn't that outgoing like you say he will probally feel embarrassed.

So here's a kid who's had mommy give him everything and now she's going to spend a bunch more to give him a "sweet 16" party. Blech!!!!! Barf!!!!!!! What happens when he gets out on his own and finds that money doesn't grow on trees? Grow up lady and quit giving your kids everything on a silver platter. Prepare for LIFE.

Go ahead and do something special for his birthday, but don't call it a Sweet 16 party. "Sweet 16" should be reserved for girls.
