Hi! My female JRT is 2 years old. Last night, I gave her dog food around, 8:00pm, she ate it no problem. When I came back home at 9:00pm, I took her out to do her thing. She didn't do anything, she started eating grass like crazy, something that I have only seen her do on occassions, but not the way she did it last night. She was going crazy, nonstop I literally had to stop her, cuz it scared me. She is a very hyper-dog and I have seen her eat stuff off the floor and grass, but never like that! That just scared the hell out of me, excuse the expression. When I brought her inside, I thought she was going to "barf", but she didn't. All night I kept my eye on her, like a child! In the morning, she was fine, she didn't barf! Someone had told me, that she probably had an upset stomach. The last time she went to the vet, was about 2 weeks ago, to get her Parovirus shot. Can you please let me know why she did that?? Thanx

Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet.

Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.

The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.

In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

My dogs always eat grass! I joke around with my boyfriend and now we always say that I "have to take the cows out to graze".
Okay, anyway, dogs do this sometimes because their tummy might hurt or something and there is a certain type of grass that makes them "barf" like you mentioned. Throwing up makes their tummies feel better!
I hope that makes sense!

Maybe the grass helps her to digest the food, do you always feed her late at night?I know the grass will not hurt her.Try feeding her early about 6:00 and see what happens.I always thought that you were suppose to feed dogs that age twice daily, about 12 hours apart.I fed mine at 6 & 6.Aren't they the cutest ever?
