he came here (USA) Miami in1988 without papers! he got marry to a cuban - american and he got a working permit to wok in 1997 here, but he got divorced and he could not get his visa. since then he's been receiving a work permit. and he has a social security and driver's license. is he still an illegal person?

If he has a work permit, then he is a temporary legal resident. But I don't think your friend is going to be very happy with you posting up his family matters all over Yahoo answers.

Oh, in that case, ask away. But anyway, you can apply and qualify for a work permit without ever getting a visa.

If you come here to the USA without papers you are illegal. There are many illegals that supposedly have social security cards and drivers licenses, often times they are counterfeit. If he doesn't have legal citizenship, or a legal visa to stay here, he is illegal.

No it sounds like he is legal or they would not give him a work permit. You have to have a resident card or visa to get a work permit, I think!=)

ok....if you HAVE a work permit, you are not illegal. that is permission to work...that's what it means...he CAN work. is it HIS social security number? yeah? i think he's ok then.
