My husband and I are going on vacation for 5 days (wed-sat) soon, and our 6 month old kitten will have to stay home at our apartment.
We plan on having friends or family come and check on him (feed him, clean litterbox, play with him, etc.) a few times while we're gone.
How often should I have someone check in on him, and is it preferable to keep him at home or bring him to a cat kettle (if that even exists)?

Leave him at home. Most cats don't travel well. Have somebody come by at least once a day to make sure he is okay. In the past, I've left cats alone in a house for up to 9 days alone. They were fine. They will complain as only cats can when you get back, but they always forgive and forget.

I have 5 cats. None of which are kittens anymore, However, I recently went on vacation for 10 days. I had somebody come over once in the morning (doesn't matter exactly what time) and once in the evening. Its up to the person that is coming to check on the kitten whether or not they stay for a little bit to play with the kitten to give it some attention. Cats do just fine without you being there. As long as somebody comes by to feed them and clean out the litter box, most cats don't care.

Not to worry, the little one will be just fine.

A cat KETTLE.? What the hell are you going to do ?? Cooked cat, there are very few recipes for cooked kitty cat.....Seriously, Have them check every day..Poor kitty is very young and needs some contact with somebody. They are very social and it is mean to abandon the kitten. They don't know where you went and they get very lonely..When I had to go away for more than a half day I would leave the television on. It may sound stupid but it is something to break to monotony of a sound less home...

I've left my kitties (even when they were young) home alone during short trips before. Having a "check-up person" is necessary; kenneling a cat for short trips is not. I'd say every day check-ins is enough; every other can suffice. Leave out extra food and water (double than usual, as a rule) and have a good time!

I would not leave my kitten alone for 5 days, Although like you said you will get family & friend to check in on him - its not really very fair on your kitten, as he will get lonely and miss you.
I would suggest either getting a cat sitter or arranging for him to stay in a cattery (but make sure you do your research - as there are some awful one's !!) .

I regards to how often someone should check on him, I would say as much as possible, as he is only a kitten and although will cope being on his own, he's like a child being left on his own - he will be lonely and maybe even scared.

I would say a at least 3x a day, as he will need to be fed in the morning, afternoon & evening. You also need to make sure he is stimulated and there is someone to play with him for a good 30mins a day.

In my opinion I would find a good quality cattery, they are not that expensive, but as mentioned you need to visit the cattery 1st to make sure its suitable.

Sometimes a boarding facility is the only solution. I do think it is much easier on the kitty to remain in his home environment and have someone reliable to come in to meet his needs daily.

Being confined in a cage with so many strange cats around (remember they SMELL them even if they can't see or interact with them) is really stressful for a cat though of course they will survive the experience.

I wouldn't kennel him. I'd get someone to check on him a couple of times a day and play with him. Most people don't mind playing with kittens or puppies so I don't think this would be difficult to find.

That's a long time to leave the kitten alone. It's good that someone will be in to check on him but he might get into some destructive mischief if he's all by himself for very long. If it were me, I'd kennel him for the time you are gone.

Can the kitten stay at a family members house or friends house while you are gone? Its not a good idea to leave the kitty alone.
