There's a new movie "300" about the Spartans' battle with the Persians at Thermopolae. But even a casual glance at the history of the Spartans should have high schools and colleges dumping Spartans as a mascot. The Nazis were efficient, organized and passionately devoted to nationalism. All that sounds great, if you don't see the whole picture. But nobody's choosing the Fighting Nazis for a school's nickname. Aside from military training and heroism, just about everything about the Spartans is a legacy of inhumanity.

i guess Spartans are glorified like vikings, are vikings being dropped as well?? Well i guess its because they were not trying to cause genocide, that would be the reason that its OK to like Spartans.

Yah, they were a bunch of brutal bastards, but they were the best. Period. The Nazis weeded out people they believed to be weak simply as a politcal means of scapegoating with no real goal in mind. The Spartans eliminated the weak. It didn't matter how rich of a family you were born into or how good looking you were. If you couldn't cut it, you were cut the hell up. While that kind of ruthlessness is hard to stomach, it is admirable all the same.

Good point. Maybe 2000 years from now there will be schools with the Nazis as mascots.

I think it would be hilarious to have a school named the "Stormtroopers" with a mascott dressed up in an SS uniform goosestepping along the sidelines.

History is written by winners. Greeks won, Nazis don't. Is just that simple.
