that is why it's more reliable...because it takes more time. they really want to make sure your marriage is "real." the fiance visa takes less time because it's only valid for 3 months, then you must show them your marriage certificate and proceed with the marriage route, just like you would have done if you skipped the fiance visa. the fiance visa is really only good if your soon to be spouse has no type of visa yet. if he already has a tourist visa...he doesn't really need a fiance visa, because he can be in the US legally already. and the fiance visa doesn't mean he can work....you need a work permit for that, and it can take up to 3 months to get one...and the fiance visa is only valid for that amount of time anyways!!

i don't know if this is true, but i have heard the US encourages people to apply for the fiance visa...they say it's better. but a lawyer friend of mine says they only say that because it allows them (the government) more rights to reject you.

if i were you, i'd get married on paper and not tell my family...begin the paperwork, and hopefully by the time you have your church wedding (or whatever type you plan) then all the legal stuff will be out of the way! it should take about 9 months...maybe sooner...but your man has to work right? the work permit can take some time.

A marriage visa takes more time because most immigrants use this type of Visa just to obtain their residency papers; the USCIS has to verify that the applicant didn't get married just to obtain these documents, but that it is in fact a genuine marriage.
Besides, ever since 9/11 the USCIS became stricter (paranoid)and obtaining a Visa is a pain in the ***
Check out the link and the USCIS website!
