My husband recently spent 18 days in the hospital due to severe pnemonia and kidney failure. Now the lungs are looking good, but his kidneys are not functioning. He can urinate "some" like maybe a half a cup for the entire day, how likely can kidneys begin to function normally again?

The likelihood of recovery depends on the cause of the kidney failure. Some types of damage are permanent, and other types heal completely. When kidneys recover, they sometimes do so by gradually increasing the urinary output - so your husband might be on this track since there is at least some production.
Your husband's doctor is the only one who can answer this question. You could call the docs office and see if the doc can give you an answer.

It depends on if they were permanently damaged. You would have to talk to his doctors about this. If he is home, that is a good sign. If they weren't working at all, then he would be in the hospital on dialysis.
*********OMG....did she say colostomy bag? That has nothing to do with your kidneys. That's is your colon.
When your kidneys fail, dialysis is the only thing that can help. That or a transplant.

He may require surgery to remove damaged tissue, or he may end up with a colostomy bag as a permanent fixture in his life. You can't live long without your kidneys - they are basically the "waste water treatment" in the human body, and if they aren't doing their job, bad things stay in your system and are not filtered out.
If they heal depends on the extent of the damage. His doctors will know the answers to your questions better than any of us here will.

Colostomy bags are not for kidneys. THAT'S at least one thing you won't have to worry about. Dialasis is for kidneys. Whether kidneys ever regain function I don't know - you should ask his doctor. For that matter, his doctor should already have told you.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
