on a car speaker, there is a large(1/4") and a small(<1/8") spade fitting.
the small one is positive, right? there is no + mark on the speaker.

Home receivers have a THD rating that shows how much distortion they have.
Is there any similar rating for car speakers to show how accurate they are?
If there isnt, what is a good way to select speakers, either in a store or online.
thanks

The large terminal is usually considered to be positive. THD ratings are for amps, they are not for speakers. Speakers do not make their own distortion, they transfer distortion from the amp (which produces it). There are no "easy-to-read" ratings on speakers. Frequency response is probably the most accurate rating to find a "smooth" speaker. Freq. resp. is usually termed as ex,.. 60hz-20Khz +/- 1dB. The key aspect of the rating is the dB. The lower the number, the smoother the sound. Be cautious though, not all car audio manufactures are 2006 CAE compliant. Car Audio is not held to strict standards like home audio. The absolute best way to choose your speakers is listen to them at an audio shop.

The easiest (and most accurate) way to determine speaker polarity is by using a AA battery. When applied to the terminals, the correct polarity will push the speaker out. Just don't leave it hooked up for very long.

Amplifiers have the THD rating and goes up the lower impedance you load an amp with.

the large on is + the small is -

yes there is a THD rating for both Head Units and amps

a good way to select speakers is the most obvious. listen to them listen to every speaker you can, and not just at best buy and circut city, but at private shops that sell other, better brands. then once you find what you really like, go online and see how cheap you can get it.

good luck
