You can back out at any time BEFORE you go to MEPS and swear in on the day you are to ship out for basic. Your recruiter won't be too happy about it, but you can do that with no legal ramifications

I've heard you can. It will simply be an administrative discharge or entry level discharge. It's actually in the contract somewhere that if you fail to complete your initial military training within 11 months (I think) of joining you will recieve an administrative discharge. Don't listen to the others, or your recruiter for that matter. I'm positive you won't be charged with desertion or recieve a bad discharge. For my two cents I would evaluate why you want out though. If it is out of fear of basic, then that's a bad reason in my opinion. If however you have had a genuine change of heart, then it's better you get out now. Keep in mind that some people get in and like it. Whatever your decision stick with it.

You'll get an Entry Level Separation and go your merry way. All the dire consequences are just figments of peoples' imaginations. The .gov isn't going to spend a sh*tload of money on your sorry *ss so they can get some kind of stupid satisfaction from punishing you.
They'll let you go without much of a fuss, and then you can go smoke dope and get laid while the rest of us, who had the stones to follow though, go fight the war.
