I think some people do over use it. I find myself using it to close a conversation. It's like a polite dismissal.

If thank you is a compliment. It should be used sparingly like a seasoning. Too much, and it's no good. Too many compliments in general, and they tend to lose their value to the recipient, and the giver is viewed as a sycophant....though nice and polite.

This goes especially, when the "thank you" isn't even warranted.

however, if your lab is inspected by ELAP and the NY State Department of Health, who begin to ask you three thousand million questions and rip you a new one, the situation becomes somewhat different, something to the tune of:

"THANK YOU SIR, MAY I HAVE ANOTHER"

....and that can never be said too much.

yes and no most people dont even think about it especially in business interactions.. wouldnt quit doing it common courtesy like a smile you maybe able to tell when its fake

Yes, I say it out of habit to the wrong people. I say "you too" when I shouldn't also.

if you are doing business with another person, a thank you is always appropriate

It can be at times,but 'thank you' is considered proper etiquette for most people in society.
