You seem really young, and I guess I want to spare you the delusion that there is a fool proof way to do this. The bottom line is that there are different types of people, and generally speaking, depending on the type of person you are, and how nervous you are about bringing it up or saying anything, the person that will make it awkward is you, if it isn't mutual. And I'm not saying that you will make it awkward in the moment, but it will sting, and suddenly, it will change on both sides, not just his. Suddenly there's this truth out there, and you're vulnerable, and you don't know what's going to happen. You will have to deal with the rejection and try and save face in the same breath, which is not an easy task.
Ultimately, you don't know, and right now, he either has a good idea that you have feelings for him or he is completely oblivious depending on how well you're hiding it. If I were you I would weigh exactly how important this friendship is, and how much of a gamble you're willing to take. For instance, if he constantly talks about how hot your friend/sister/roomate is, PLEASE spare yourself the agony of having your heart ripped out and don't do it. There's no reason to set yourself up.
BUT! If he's single, likes to spend time with you, and he notices you when you walk in the room most of the time, and has sought you out more than once, and not just for a favor, I think you've got a shot.

well it depends..if the guy friend is close enough to you that you can visit him. Than simply go at his place on some evening and have a bit of chat and than just ask him about " there is this place called .XXXX ( X being some cool bar or low crowded cozy restaurant ) where you never been and would he like to come along ? " , sure any guy wud say yes..! just offer him the dinner and while you both are out ask him some stuff about relationships and his feelings and simply say in some sweet time in the chat that you kinda like him and would he like if you can see each other. You can also try asking him to come along for a nice movie, some cool park or some beach ( if you have one there cos thats the best place to have emotional chats ) and if he is a net pal don't even think about asking cos its just attraction.. Last but not the least I would like to say " There isn't anything better than true love to ruin a perfect friendship "
