How is this different to say... a JPEG, BMP, or a PNG?

In addition to the information above, jpg files are only 8bit where raw are 16bit, which means raw contains much more contrast/colour information than jpg. Also, because of the compression artefacts of jpg, raw gives a more detailed image, and will enlarge better.

The others have largely hit on the meaning or RAW.

One minor but maybe significant point. RAW on a specific camera might not mean completely raw. The Nikon D70 does slightly process or transform the image between the sensor used to capture the image and what is stored on the card as the image.

I do not have the details in front of me. Just assume that RAW can mean something other than zero processing before you take the image off the memory card.

A raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and ready to use with a bitmap graphics editor, printed, or displayed by a typical web browser. Normally, the image must be processed and converted to an RGB format such as TIFF or JPEG before it can be manipulated.

JPG is a compressed format - so the quality is not as good when the photo is magnified

Wow all great answers. I am starting to shoot in RAW format and really lov the control u have over the images. I also use photoshop CS2 now but if anyone else is going to start using the RAW format make sure u use a very fast card and one over 2GB. If u want to knw the control u have Try downloading and using adobe lightroom to edit your .jpg images and that is the sort of control u will hav using RAW. Good luck

raw is just that...raw. its as it was recorded, not manipulated by the camera software. a 5 meg Jpeg becomes a 40 meg Raw file.

also it cannot be edited or maipulated in the camera, you have to use a PC/mac..

raw files are not compressed in any way, unlike jpegs.
