The story said that she drank 2 gallons at one time which is far more than any normal person would drink in an entire day. I don't think you have to be afraid of accidentally drinking too much water. As far as how much you can drink I'd say it depends on the size of the person.

8-10 cups a day is all you need but up to 12 is good anything over that may cause you to feel dizzy or give you drunk like systoms. It actually all depends on your body and how dehydrated you are at any given point. If you drink water on a regular basis stick with the no more that 12 8oz glass rule. If you have carve more than that you may want to consult a doctor. there may be an underlying condition causing your thirst.

im pretty sure that in the majority of people your body would chuck it back up! your stomach has a capacity of 2 litres, your kidneys also filter 700ml of blood a minute, the release of adh hormone would be stopped allowing for your water habit.

i guess if you pee (unlike the stupid bint in the story) you can drink what you like.
