my dog has had about 3 BM's (bowel movments) yesterday. i saw that it didnt look right so i got a flash light, and i saw that there is something that looks abnormal. it was BIG too, it almost looked like a worm, but it didnt move. then i got some gloves on and put it into a container and put the container into a baggie. the vet is closed cause of the ice and bad weather we have been having here. im nervous that this is something bad, he's been like this for about a week or so maybe. i didnt notice it before though. he's stomach doesnt sound upset, he's eating and drinking just fine, is this somthing bad???? will it hurt him if i CANT take him to the vet since it is closed?? i have the stool sample ready for when i can go to the vet, but what can i do until then? today he hasnt pooped i dont think, could it just have been something he ate?

If your other dog had worms, this dog could possibly have them. Whip worms can be caught from the soil. One of my dogs caught them this way...from digging in the soil and licking his paws. Always make sure you clean up your yard completely after the one that does have the worms and you can try and prevent a future outbreak. i also believe they sell stuff you can sprinkle on the soil to kill them to prevent future outbreaks, but I may be mistaken.
If it's white and looks like a worm, it most likely is. What type of worm your vet will have to determine. I would try and get an appointment asap to start treatment. If you are on heartworm treatment though, that is a good thing as it will prevent a lot of other intestinal worm, so you and he should be fine :) Best of luck!

What did the worm look like? Spaghetti or Rice?
Frequent BM can just mean you need a better quality food, however a worm needs meds. As long as he is eating and drinking (water most important) you should be fine till you get to the vet. Keep the stool sample in the frig (sounds gross, but the fecal will stay "fresh" and easier to detect parasite). If the worm resembled a piece of rice (tapeworm). Any dog can get these they get them from fleas or eating grass etc... If it was a long worm it was probably roundworms. Either is treatable and not a major problem just get to the vet as soon as you can. There are also may other parasites that the eye can not see. A fresh fecal to the vet should clear up everything.

What you saw might have been a "round worm", and it's not uncommon for them to be dead when they exit the dog. There are some over-the-counter medications that are effective against round worms. If weather is keeping you from driving out to get some medication, you can purchase it on-line at places like drsfostersmith.com and have it delivered to your door.
Hang onto your existing sample, and when you're able to get the dog to a vet take the vet a fresh one, too, so he can run his tests on that.
You're doing the right thing by being concerned and getting the dog a vet appointment, but don't panic. Unless this "foreign object" was accompanied by a lot of mucus, blood, or runny stools, it's probably not something to worry to much about.

If the worm wasn't moving, it could have been a dead one from when you treated him for worms. Yes, I know it's been a month since he was treated, but if he was really infested, I do believe they could still be coming out of him. If he's on a monthly heart worm medication, they usually prevent most types of worms from coming back, so I don't think he would get worms while on that. You might take him to the vet for a follow up visit, but I wouldn't freak out about it. He'll be fine. Good luck

You are right about it not being heartworms. They are not in the stool.
However, your dog does have worms and will need to be treated again.
What happens is that if the dog is treated only once or twice it will not kill the worms in all of the life cycles. You will need to treat once, again in 10 days, again in 10 days, then again in 2 weeks, then one more time in 2 weeks, then once a month for 3 months.
You can find a broad based dewormer at the pet store, make sure it covers the tape and whip worms.
Otherwise, keep the sample in the fridge and bring it to the vet and explain you want to treat the dog just as a puppy needs deworning.
It's not an emergency for today, but get him in tomorrow. Make sure he has plenty of water and the meals can be light until treated.
Good luck, sorry to hear about the nasty weather!

If he's eating and acting normally, I'd just make sure you get a stool sample (fresher is better) to the vet as soon as they open. They can test it for worms and parasites and it'll cost way less than it would to bring your dog in for an exam. I'd take the old stool sample with you, but make sure you take a fresh one too.
If he stops going to the bathroom, eating, or acting normally, go to the vet ASAP with your dog.

Sounds like worms. He'll be okay if you get him in when the vet opens up. In the meantime, make sure that he is still eating, drinking, and playing like normal. If he acts strange at all, you may have to find a vet that is open and get him in!

Your pup has worms. Is it really underweight and acting sickly? If it is it's an emergancy. If not, wait until tomorrow when the vet will be open.
