Solar panel technology has only advanced so far. A huge surface area is still required to harness enough energy to make it viable on a daily basis.
Locations a great distances from the equator will only be able to use solar energy approximately half the year, and thus require additional sources of energy.

first,the sun is not always out(at night) and therefore it can't be used all the time and secondly,the equipment used to initiate or collect this energy is very expensive
