i witnessed an event while vacationing in Gizwil, Switzerland and to this day am curious whether it was a one time thing or a regular event. basically a whole bunch of what seemed to be local folk assembled in the mass hall of the Bahnhof Inn (i think, it could have been a next-door eatery of some sort). people were all in good mood, taking turns on the stage signing folk songs, drinkning, having great time. it very well could have been a wedding, except there was no bride or groom, at least i didnt spot them.

if memory serves, this was in the spring of 2005.

question is, what was that?

Maybe this?

2. Volkskulturfest OBWALD
Titel: 2. Volkskulturfest OBWALD
Datum: Sa, 23.06.2007
Veranstaltungsort: 6074 Giswil, Gsang, Giswil
Rubriken: Brauchtum / Feste, Musik / Theater
Veranstalter: Kanton Obwalden

So the second folk-culture fest. Could be every two years.

Sort of surprising, most of these folk events are like the 380th annual (parade, onion market, shooting fest, flag throwing show, snowman burning) but I think they're usually, let's say, weirder than what you describe.

I might just check it out!

It could have been anything really. The Swiss have celebrations for just about anything and everything....the Blessing of the cows going into summer pasture, etc. etc. Small villages and towns have even more local stuff that no one but them understands. It may have been just a party of friends getting together to have fun. Remember, most people live in small apartments so getting all of your friends in your apartment is almost impossible.
