If you own your home, you can improve energy efficiency that is affordable. First, use the sun for light and heat whenever the sun is shining in the window in the room you are in. Before starting, check the temperature of the room. When it gains a few degrees, put a low running speed fan between the doorway to the adjoining room. this will transfer some heat into that room. If more than one room gets direct sunlight do the same.
Second, keep the thermostat set at 68 Degrees Farenheit or 66 during the daytime, whichever is comfortable. You don't want to feel chilled, because in time you could begin to feel ill. Lower it to 60 degrees when going to bed. The blankets will keep you warm. Use a thermal blanket to trap your body heat. The thermostat should be in the room that is used most and away from heating elements. The thermostat should be installed about six feet high from the floor.
Third, keep the water heater thermostat set at no higher than 110 degrees.
Fourth, install a water saving showerhead and aerators on all faucets.
Fifth, install ceiling fans where possible to cool the room. This will lessen the need for continuous air conditioning.

cover windows with that plastic to keep drafts down, turn your furnace down while not at home, turn off all lights and tvs when your not in the room, open curtains in home during the day to let the sun warm your rooms up, close curtains in the summer to keep the warm out.
