Either from scratch, or using convenience products, with or without yeast. I want it to have a distinct "corn bread" flavor. It would be good with cheese in the recipe, but would also like to see recipes without cheese in the bowl ingredients. The bowl will have to be thick enough to stand up to a meaty chilli.

Very interesting! Never thought about a cornbread bowl..however did use a cornmeal tortilla the other day...baked it in the oven over a stainless steel bowl...like a taco salad bowl type thing. Poured the chili in and topped with cheese, black olives, jalapeno pepper slices and sour cream. Worked really well. Will keep watch on this question as i would like to know how to make a cornbread bowl.

Choux Pastry (bake a serving bowl)

1 cup water
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 tablespoon sugar plus 1/8 teaspoon salt (for sweet)
or 1 teaspoon salt (for savory)
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 large eggs

Preheat oven to 400º F. Bring water, butter, and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat, while stirring to melt butter. Remove from heat. Add flour all at once and cook over medium heat, beating with a big wooden spoon until mixture pulls away from side of pan and dough forms a ball, about 1 minute.

Remove from heat and add eggs 1 at a time, beating well with wooden spoon after each addition. (A standing mixer can be used to add eggs.) Use within 2 hours.

Place on cookie sheet and bake in preheated oven until lightly browned. Let cool completely before filling. Will "puff" and be hollow after baking. With a sharp knife, remove top, fill as desired, and replace top if you want.

You can dump the chilli on top of the batter, add cheese, and bake the bread as normal. the batter will eventually surround the chilli and you can chop it in half and serve.
