When I am stopped at a red light for left turn why do the cars behind sometimes honk and signal asking me to turn anyway. I never know if its okay to turn or not. Most of the time I drive in Georgia or Florida.

No its not most of the time it is posted the only time I think it is alright is if you are on a one way street and are turning left onto another one way street. But If its posted No left turn on red then just sit there if you want.

You would only turn left on red if the red light is flashing, and not solid. If the red light is flashing, then that light is treated like a stop sign - you would come to a full and complete stop, make sure there is no oncoming traffic and then proceed with caution. It is not allowed to make a u-turn on a left side red light.

In 2005, North Carolina made left turns on red legal, but only from one one way street to another. Thats about the only way a left on red would be legal.

Most states will stipulate "No turn on Red."

Left turns are a bit more difficult for people to comprehend and they don't take into consideration it's usually when dealing with a specific type of traffic flow that allows a LEFT turn on red.

Good rule of thumb....if the left turn is on to a one way road going in to the direction of your turn...the left turn on red is OK.

Just remember to look for those signs that say "No turn on Red."

It is okay to turn left on red if the street that you are on is one way and the next street is one way and if there is no signs saying "No Turn On Left".

David,
It is not okay to turn left on red. You can only turn right on red as you are going with the flow of the traffic not against it. People always honk their horns these days. Obey the laws, they will wait.

If you have a red light--NO. If the signal is equipped with a left turn arrow that turns from red to green, then you may make a left turn.
