Whats the best way to take the pith off an Orange? not the peel but the white stringy bits on the Orange itself?

Before you peel it, if you roll the orange around on a hard surface while pressing down firmly with your hand, it will help to loosen the pith from the orange segments.

It also makes it much easier to peel if you take a sharp paring knife and score the skin of the orange in pie segments. That is all the way around from stem to bottom and stem again, then move the knife half way around from that initial cut and do this again. And then halve those four segments. Then loosen the peel at the stem end and lift each of the beginnings of those eight segments of peel with your knife. Then peel off with your fingers. Most of the pith will come off with these segments of peel.

if you want to remove the pith, best way is to slice off the top & bottom of the orange, so that it will sit level. then, following the curve of the orange flesh, cut the pith and peel away at the same time. you can then section the orange by carefully slicing close to each side of each section's membranes. it takes a while, but this is the only way to remove all the pith.

The Best / Easiest way to remove the pith of the orange:

- Lay orange on it's side.
- With sharp knife, slice top and bottom to create a flat base -- approx 1/2 " from top/bottom
- Turn orange so one of the just cut ends sit on the cutting board.
- Using knife, slice down from top to bottom (following the contour of the orange), a thin cut of peel/pith from the orange -- turning the orange around to remove entire peel/pith.

Once you've done this a few times, you will lose very little "meat" from the orange.

Now you've got your orange cleaned of pith and peel.

For a decorative presentation, you can cut these across the segments, displaying them as rounds.
-or--
If you'd like to go further, to add a bit of elegance to a green salad, fruit salad, or desert -- you can Supreme the orange => See link below.
This involves separating segments from their membranes..

Furthermore, to add a hint of orange flavor to frosting's, salads, baking goods, cooked foods, etc. -- you can remove and use the orange's zest (thin orange colored layer, just above the pith -- actually the "skin" of the orange)..

Good luck

You don't say whether you want to remove the pith from the peel or from the orange itself. If you are making marmalade and want to remove the pith from the peel, use a metal spoon, dessert or soup, and scrape it off. All the other methods will work for the flesh.

if I'm making a salad or something where i need alot of oranges i take a long slender knife, cut off the ends and then standing it on one end i slice the peel and the pith from the orange from top to bottom turning the orange as i go. i then lay it on its side and cut into rounds.kids like em this way too cause they don't have to deal with the stringy white stuff.

I find that if you roll the orange between the palms of your hands, or one hand on a flat surface, it makes it easier to remove both peel and then pith. Don't be too rough with the rolling though or you'll break the skin and end up with a mess.

I don't know, just peel the orange and pick all the white stuff off. When I make a fruit salad, I sharpen my knife, wash and dry the orange, set it on a cutting board, cut off the bottom all the way through the membrane that's around the orange segments. Then I place the flat end of the orange on the cutting board and start peeling the orange with the knife from top to bottom and all the way through the membrane. Finally, I cut off the top. Then I grab the orange in my hand and cut out the individual segments.

CHOP off the peel, so you kinda have a "square" lookin orange, but then you don't get a lot of juice
