Current Event: Cold weather ruins California citrus crops resulting in sending workers home. Most of these workers are from Mexico. What happens to the Mexican worker in this case? Do he return to Mexico, or do they look for other employment in the USA? Do they get unemployment benifits?

Contrary to what a previous answerer said...I just want to clarify this for everyone...migrant farm workers most often ARE legal. They receive a seasonal work permit to enter the US.
Well, giraffe, when the crop fails, the farms will release the migrant workers from employment (fire them). This therefore will invalidate their work permit, and they will have to return to Mexico within 30 days or risk being deported for being here illegally.
Some of the migrant workers will comply, others will try to find farms with other crops that will employ them so they can stay working here legally, and still others will choose to stay in the US and risk working here illegally.
One last thing...those people making unkind racist remarks are merely unaware of the situation, and have no humanity. Why say horrible things about other human beings merely because of their race, which by the way they had no choice in being born into? You could have been born a Mexican. What would you say then?

No one here "fears" or "loathes" Mexicans or any other nationality, but just as your spouse had to go through the proper channels to get here (like it or not) so should everyone else. Think about how completely over run our country would be if we just opened our doors and let every one in. The economy would be crippled because none of these people have employment, hospitals and schools would be impossible to get into, not to mention the lovely terrorists that would just love a free pass into the good ole U.S.A. There are laws in place for a REASON and just because you may have had to overcome some hardship does not mean that these laws are wrong or useless. Your children may thank you some day.

In Kansas they work here during the summer spring and fall and then most of them return to Mexico in the winter for a cheaper lifestyle. $10,000 American Dollars down there will get them alot futher along than their own money. A man with $20,000 looks like a millionare to most of their kind. When they are here in Kanas they get assistance from the state. So therefore most of them don't leave at all...

they are "migrant" workers for a reason. they will migrate to another area of the country for more work. i read a published diary once, written by an illegal immigrant during the 30's and he refered to the months in fruits and vegitables, not the actual months! of course, with bad weather, that can't be good news...but that is the life you lead when you are not legal. the type of worker who picks crops is not likely to have false work permits, so no, they will not collect unemployment, it's not that type of work.

They either go home or stay here. Most will try to make a go of it here. They may be livingin boxes under bridges if no work is found. Or they may get involved in criminal activity. Large groups of illegal behaving LEGAL amnestied individuals in this country, just looking for stupidos to do their dirt for them.
This is the kind of problem illegal immigration spawns. It should be an intersting note to see if and when fruit crops fail ...if America can't feed itself anymore (sarcasm) or if large groups of un working illegals, leave the country cuz they can't find work.
I doubt either will occurr.
