I just bought a house and the bottom cupboard and countertop are stainless steel. They came from an old school house cafeteria and are absolutely hideous. They have about 1.5 inch holes through every cupboard and drawer from when there were locks on all the drawers. They dont fit properly in the kitchen and are the biggest eye sore of the house. The top cupboards in the kitchen are a fake wood and are semi OK so if I don't have to replace them I'd rather not. Does anyone have any ideas how I can either make this less hideous or find some very very cheap used or defected cupboards. I've already put an ad in the paper to no avail. I don't have alot of money to work with and this is for a rental. I realize for a rental it isn't really important how it looks but the fact that it doesnt fit and there are pieces of cut exposed metal is a bit dangerous. Please help me~!

I don't rent it, I own it as a rental so I am the landlord.

I don't think new cupboard doors or drawers would work with it. I think it would still be horribly ugly.

I'd go to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. You might be able to cheaply get the perfect cabinets. (And they might want your old cabinets.)

Also, I know a couple that used cupboards in their basement rental apartment that came from a stage show. Theatres generally throw out most of their sets when the production finishes.

Another slim possibility is to talk to your local college, they might have a metal-working or carpentry program. You might be able to get some affordable cupboards, or renovations that way.

Oh, and for a rental, it is important how it looks. You'll get better tenants that way.

You may not realize it but in part you've answered your own question. You were treated horribly as child, feeling unloved, unwanted and outright hated. You grew up believing every parent secretly hates their children they just don't or won't admit it. So if a friend has a child, they are a hypocrite, a fake person only pretending. How am I doing so far? Granted not every woman is meant to be a mother, on that point you are 100% correct, however your childhood has left you with scars you can't see. I don't think you hate kids nearly as much as you hate yourself, which is typical of those abused as children. Your 'hatred' of kids stems from your un-dealt with past, it's a way to cope. If you 'hate' kids then any you might have had can NEVER be abused as you were. Therapy can help you understand this better. I wish you all the best no matter what you decide.

Find a local guy/company that does cabinets. Dont go with Sears or anyone big, they will estimate something like $6000 to reface. Find a cabinet guy out of the paper or phone book. Talk with them and see if they can order some cabinet doors - they have fake ones that are paint grade that once painted will look just like the real deal. New hinges and some cheap hardware (pulls) and they will look great! Then also have them replace the fronts of the drawers - he may need to build you some drawerboxes for this and install new slideguides. We just had our kitchen done (13 feet of cabinets top and bottom) and it only cost us $1400 including labor). Then we took the top off of the counter and put hardibacker board down and tiled the counter top so that was a very cheap project - about $200 if I remember correctly.

You could try staining the stainless steel, You can buy paint/stain for metal. and experiment with a piece of stainless steel till you get the effect you want. Look for different types of metals that you like and try it. You could also use chicken wire for the upper cabinets( instead of a full cupboard),you could put medallions over the holes, Go to a hobby store and let your imagination run wild. I would not try and purchase "cheap cabinets" because that is what they are. Another web site to look into is industrial decorating

You could try replacing just the doors of the cupboards with something that will match the top ones.

Most major stores. Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, sell replacement cabinet doors. Measure your cabinets and see what you can purchase plain panel cabinet doors for, shouldnt be that expensive.

What about covering the metal with contact paper. Quick, cheap, easy to clean, fast fix, if it's ok with your landlord.
