Some time ago I joined a sports association to take tennis lessons. After a few years I wanted to stop. I knew that I had to cancel my membership before the 1st of August. If I didn't my membership would just continue. So, before the 1st of august I sent a letter cancelling my membership. Recently I saw that money was stil taken off my bank account.
I told them this but they are stil continuing my membership for this year and not refunding. They said that it is written on the website that I would recieve a confirmation letter within 2 weeks- and to call if this is not the case. - I was not aware of this and must not have read well enough. I did not recieve any confirmation- and thought that my membership was cancelled.

gulp. Is there anything I can do?

Did you send the letter certified receipt, or proof of delivery.

If so, then show this to them and demand your money back.

I would go to the bank and cancel the draft.

was your cancellation in writing, and on a timely basis,if so, you just have to pursue the matter further. If not then, try appealing to the next level of management at the club but, whatever form you signed probably says fees are not refundable be sure and contact your bank to shut off flows from your account if there is some compelling reason that you can cite for cancellation, such as sickness, moving, whatever, then you might want to try small claims court, that is not too costly, at least in my state, but depends on how much your loss is. ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT of any financial document you have to sign.

Try talking to a manager or someone who is in charge there. Did you keep a copy of the letter? If so, bring it along, be polite and explain that as much as you enjoyed going there, for whatever reason you are not able to at this time. Chances are, they will try to accomodate you. As a last resort, you may contact a Better Business Bureau in your area, where they take complaints about businesses. Their website address is: www.bbb.org. Good luck!
