i answered this same question a short time ago. here was my answer.....althought it's still very similar to everyone else's answer....(and all the references to what 'other guys said' is from the last answers as well, not the ones to your question, although some were similar)

..................................................
all tattoo artists get paid cash. there are no corporate tattoo headquarters sending out checks. you probably already knew this, but i was just refering to the guy who said "coming from a tattoo artist who gets paid under the table". we aren't washing dishes, that's just how it works, we get paid cash.

like everyone else is saying, there is no standard. there are so many factors that go into it, like how busy the shop/artist is and how many tattoos (if any) they did that day. sometimes the weather affects the customer average, stuff like that. some artists charge by the hour, and some by the size and detail of each piece. but keep in mind that not all that money goes to the artist. and no, not every artist gets paid 60/40 like some other guy said. it all depends on how long the person has been working as an artist. i've seen people getting paid as low as 20% (which was really wrong anyway) and some people getting paid as high as 70, 80%. i would guess the only way you get 100% of the money you make is if you own the shop, however in that case you're responsible for paying all the bills of the shop so in a sense you don't get all your money.

so in short, there is no such thing as a tattoo artist "salary". good luck.
.................................................

and i'm just adding this part now....i know a guy who works at a shop in the city in a not so great part and he barely makes 500 dollars a month, no lie. i know this cuz i used to work at that shop and dealt with the same thing. the shop i work at now i make anywhere from 800 to 4,600 a month depending on how busy it's been . but there are 4 other artists at this shop so if there were less i could potentially be doing more cuz i would get more pieces and i haven't been tattooing for that long so that factors into it as well. also, i'm not passing any judgement, but please make sure you are getting into this industry for the right reasons and not for the money. you might be, i'm just saying that incase. good luck!

Tattoo artists make more money over time. The more experiened you are and the larger your portfolio is, the more you get paid. It also depends on how popular your shop is, how many tats you do each week, and what you charge for them. Some artists never charge less than $100 an hour, others go lower with their repeat customers.

Also, if you run your own shop you'll definately make more money. Most artists have to pay the owner a fee (usually half of the price of each tattoo they do) for the convience of the owner letting them use their shop.

If you are currently learning??
Lets hope you are in training
with a really good artist. Who's
been in the business for a long
time. So...Why don't you ask him??
Before you get established,
there is no regular pay.
After you have been at it for some
time, there is no regular pay.
When you have become a really good artist,
have established yourself in a good shop.
Getting pretty well known..there is no regular pay.
It comes and goes with the flow of the shop.
Just as unpredictable as the weather.
So, that being said...If you are in it for the money,
go back to school, and get a good job.
Being a tattoo artist is not for you. Wanting
to do tattoo's is about the art...It's about heart.
It's a life style, based in talent and hard work.
It's not something you can just step into, you
really have to earn it.You gotta be tough enough.

i would say there is no "regular" pay for tattoo artists. also it depends on your talent level. as a starting out tattooer i would think that you would not make that much $. more talented artists can make upwards of $100 - $250 per hour but that kind of money demands extreme talent. good luck but don't rush things.

also, one of the things i have noticed is that many artists of any kind are not very good at managing their money. maybe because they get paid in cash and they spend it instead of putting some back. you do have to think about the future and the fact that you probably don't want to work for the rest of your life. it would definitely be wise to check into an ira or mutual funds.

There really isn't a regular pay. Your work and skill as an artist will determine if you make good money or not. Most make good livings, but very few artists will pull in a 6 figure income.

Only reason crappy artists might make a lot is because they'll tattoo anyone dirt cheap and they get a lot of volume.

I think thy me about 80 dollars an hour but if your really good at putting tattoos on then u could make up to 100 dollars an hour. but if your not really good at putting tattoos on people then you will probable make about 50 or 30 dollars an hour, and it also depends on how big the tattoo is and how much time it takes
