I want to renew my Canadian passport which expires in April, 2007. I understand the waiting times are very long due to the new regulations for entry into the U.S. If I am only renewing my passport, do I need to go through the entire process or is sending in my passport for renewal acceptable? Thanks for any information you can provide me.

I have to renew my passport too. I am just mailing it off. This is my 4th passport. The only difference in the application is if your passport is still valid, you have to send it with the application. So if you apply after April you don't have to send it. There is a question on the application on if you want your old passport back. If you do, they mark it void and send it with your new one.

As for 'having" to see a agent at some point through the process, like I said, this is my 4th, and I have never talked to an agent ever. I pick up the application at the post office and drop it in the mail. They charge you extra for the right to pick up your passport at their office.

To renew your passport (or obtain a new one), the process is pretty much the same. The only difference is that with a renewal, you already have an issued passport to use as supporting documentation.

You do have to turn in your old passport before being issued a new one.

And you MUST appear in person - either to submit the application, or to pick up the completed passport (although it's a really good idea to be there for BOTH). The reason for the personal appearance is to ensure the passport is issued to a legitimate holder (meaning you are who you say you are) ... everyone's security conscious these days!

You do have to fill out a new form, get the appropriate signatures and new photos but you can get the forms from the post office and some post offices will also accept the passport applications as well for a small fee (you also have to turn in your expired passport too but they'll return it to you). This will likely save you a bit of time not having to line up at the passport office and the added advantage is you don't have to go line-up again to pick it up - it gets mailed back to you. I renewed mine last year and I got it back within 3 weeks.

You have to go through the whole process again. You can either send in your application or go to an office in person. The time to get your new passport will be about the same -- it is returned to you by mail anyways.

Here is the link for the applications or you can get applications at any Canadian Post Office

I believe the wait is approx 6 weeks to get your new passport after you submit your application.
