Fortunately, my religion makes provisions for this. If I need to work on Sunday, then I just go to the Saturday night Mass, or attend at some other time. If you have to work on Sunday to support yourself or your family, that's reality, and I don't think God will fault you for it. However, using work as an excuse to avoid religious obligations altogether is inadvisable.

I understand your situation. I used to work in a Nursing Home and they didn't have enough staff to give all the Christians Sundays off. So our boss would keep that in mind as she made the schedule. She tried not to make any individual work 2 Sundays in a row. I talked to her about it and she decided to let me leave for church. So I would just work first, go to church, and then go back to work afterwards. It wasn't the ideal situation but at least I got to go to church. I agree with some of the other answers on here: try looking for another job where you won't have to worry about this, make sure you are still fellowshipping with other Christians and honoring the Lord. The Sabbath was made because God knows we need a break, and that we need Christian encouragement and we need to continue to learn about Him.

Read what Jesus says when He is questioned about why His disciples are picking grain to eat on the sabbath. Matthew 12. He doesn't say go to church anywhere in the Bible as a matter of salvation.
I personally would suggest that you ask Him what He thinks about what you're doing. I can only give you my understanding of the word.
He instructs us to not forsake the assembling of the saints, but that doesn't have to mean sunday church. Assembling also doesn't mean gathering together. It means to be put together. Like a box full of parts is gathered, but not assembled. I believe this instruction is where the true church comes in. Our personal relationships are strengthened in other kinds of settings. I mean, how much relating do you do at church? It is a time of instruction which is great, but maybe you can get sermon tapes?? The real church is the people. I would ask you if you have any other place you go where you can build with the church? A lot have mid week bible studies or home groups. I would encourage you to get involved in something like that if you can't make it to church right now.

There are churches that offer Sunday evening vespers or even Saturday night worship. Maybe you should look into one of those. It is the third commandment, but there are many ways to honor the sabbath. Or you could set aside the day you don't have work as your sabbath. The only reason it happens to be on Sunday in the first place is because Jesus rose on a Sunday. It should be between you and God. Commit what you've got to Him. Pray about it.

It's wrong to miss worship service on purpose, yes (Hebrews 10:25). If you have to work during the morning, and the church you go to has a night service, make every attempt to be at that night service.
Personally, I don't take jobs that require me to work on Sundays. Not only is that the Lord's Day, but I have a family, and have to spend time with them too.

Exellent question. As a Christian, God has several expectations of you. And I believe it is possible to reconcile these.
First, God has commanded that we "not forsake the assembling of yourselves" together. He understands it is very difficult if not impossible to live pleasing to God without the help and strength of fellow Christians. So if you are not able to meet on Sunday you MUST find time to interact with you fellow Christians at other times throughout the week. For your own spiritual health.
Second, God has commanded that we partake of the Lord's supper on the first day of the week. This partaking is both a connection with the Father but also is a communion of fellow believers. In partaking of the Lord's Supper we are communing with our fellow believers. Do you work 24 hours straight on Sunday? I doubt it. So find a fellow Christian or Christians who can meet with you maybe in a home etc. to partake of the Lord's Supper together.
Third, (related to the first point), understand it is in you best spiritual interest to meet with your fellow Christians ON SUNDAY if possible. What that means is you need to pray to God that He will open doors for you to find a different job so that you can be able to meet with your fellow Christians on Sunday. Congregational worship is so strenghtening when you can stand together and raise your voice in praise to the God of all creation. You are missing so great an experience by not being there on Sunday. It will fill you in ways that you cannot be filled alone.

If you need to make ends meet, then you need to make ends meet. Your Church should support you. PErhaps they have other opportunities for worship during the day or the week.
Soap box time:
I had an experience where I once saw a minister come into a restaurant after church, lecture his waitress for working on a Sunday, and then not leave a tip. What a hypocrite and terrible excuse for a human being. So much for being pastoral.
end rant.

We need to set aside a day to honor the Lord. Most people do this on Sunday. Luckily, for the people who have to work on Sunday, most churches now hold Wednesday and Saturday night services. If you for some reason just cannot make it on Sunday, you should go to one of the alternative night services. I'm sure God understands your situation, and that you are still honoring him.

I think you should always try your best to go to Church. With that said it would be good to get a job that didn't require working on Sunday but sometimes we can't help the circumstances such as being a nurse doctor for example. I am Catholic so there are parishes that offer nightly mass (6pm) if you cant go during the day or Sat. night as posted above. I know Mike Sweeney, baseball player for the Royals, goes mon, tuesday and wed. if he can't make sunday's mass. God Bless

No, for what day is really the day of the Lord?
Man claims it to be Saturday, since the days of the week start with Sunday.
However, the Bible does not tell us in what day (name of that day) He started creating through the day He rested.
Going to church is NOT suppose to go and worship God .. for no where in the New Testament does God demand His people to go to the temple to worship Him, like it does in the Old Testament. We go to not forsake the assembly, the FELLOWSHIP.
We can worship God seven days a week.. there is NO set day that we need to worship. Didn't Jesus get ridiculed for preaching on a Sabbath? What did He say to them that did this to Him?
"The Gospels report that Jesus conflicted with the Jewish leaders several times over Sabbath issues. Jesus rejected the restrictive traditions of the elders. He allowed his disciples to pluck grain, he healed, he taught, and he told a man to carry his sleeping mat (Mt 12:1-12; Lk 14:1-6; Jn 5:1-18). Jesus noted that priests worked on the Sabbath, that animals could be rescued or taken to water, and circumcisions could be performed (Mt 12:5-6, 11; Lk 13:15; Jn 7:22). Jesus claimed to have authority over the Sabbath, to set people free on the Sabbath, and to work on the Sabbath (Mt 12:12; Lk 13:16; Jn 5:17).[1] But Jesus did not break the Sabbath, since he was born under the law and lived under the old covenant requirements (Gal 4:4; Heb 4:15). His activities broke Pharisaic rules, but not the law of God. Early Christian writers did not claim that Jesus broke the Sabbath.[2]" http://www.wcg.org/lit/law/sabbath/history1.htm
Is it not written, where two or three are gathered in His name, He is in the midst of them? Forsaking the assembly is for the fellowship of believers. You can assembly in a church building, a backyard with other believers, in a home where you are gathered, it does NOT have to be Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday nights in the "church building". That's what is so wrong with those that find them self more righteous then what they really are, they tell us we HAVE TO gather in the "church building". No we don't!!!
I will take the Word of God over man any day. "Where two or three are gathered in His name, He is in the midst."
