A city block is roughly 500 feet give or take a little. How long it takes to walk depends on how fast you are walking and the amount of foot traffic. Should take no more then 1- 2 mins if you walk straight.

Pretty long, well it really kind of depends what block! 6Th street is about 500 ft long! I love walking in the city! It would take about 10-30 minutes, it all depends on the block!

Above 14th Street manhattan is on a grid of 20 blocks to a mile up and downtown and 5 blocks to a mile crosstown- so now you know why cab fares are based on a 1/5 mile standard.
below 14th- there is no really well defined standards for block lengths.

A block in Manhattan is actually the rectangle that the buildings are on, which according to wikipedia are approx. 900 ft. X 264 ft.
The shorter sides are usually facing east-west. If you are walking uptown-downtown (north-south) the block is 264 ft. long. If you're headed across (east-west) the blocks are 900 ft. long.

This is actually a very good question! It really isn't as bad as you might think...it seems like everything is within walking distance in NYC. It's also very fast paced there, so you will be walking faster than you normally would.
