That you could meet each other face to face and have discussions instead of posting your opinions and getting frustrated at answers you don't agree with? I do. I think it gets to the point where both sides get so annoyed because they disagree that we just start insulting. Wouldn't it be easier to debate face to face?

This is not a debate site, it is a Q&A site. And getting frustrated over answes you don't agree with is only reasonable if 1) the question is not addressed, and/or 2) the answer offers no substantiated insight, and therefore is useless. The difference for most askers is in what they consider "evidence". In religious discussions this often amounts to one or both sides accepting their holy text(s) as evidence for anything accept their holy text(s). Now that's frustrating.

Sure, a face-to-face debate is always a nice challenge, but not everybody feels comfortable with that. This forum is interesting because of its anonymity. People who would normally shy away from entering a debate will do it here because they feel less threatened. In that way, they can test their opinions (and in many cases, their proselytizing skills) from the comfort of their own computer. And there's such a wide cross-section of beliefs here that if you hang around long enough, you'll be exposed to opinions you might never have heard if you relied only on real-life debating.

I have tried this. But it still comes down to the same thing -- many many Christians, especially fundamentalists and evangelicals, insist on defining all of us by their vocabulary and point of view. Like trying to make out that evolution is a religion, or at least the doctrine and credo of atheists.

When they say "I just can't believe that you could know anything about this and not feel the love of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who died for us", at least in person I can challenge that. But otherwise the dynamics don't really change.

My favourite one though was when a fundie was telling me that homosexuality was demonic possession and I raised my voice and said quite distinctly and loudly in a crowded train station "So you're telling me that I'm possessed by a demon?"

Yes. Though... I do have conversations "in real life" with people about religion. Not as often as I used to because everyone I know is already aware of my atheism and anyone who wanted to discuss it with me already has, but occasionally there are people who want to challenge or just inquire.

On YouTube, you CAN debate / discuss "face to face", or rather "video to video". It's more personal... you see the person, you hear them, you get to respond verbally "in person"... it's an interesting forum.

I don't know if some people could handle the debate/discussions face-to-face. sometimes its easy to control your angry when typing and not jsut speaking. and face-to-face has other disadvantages. when I post on here except for pics and sometimes avatars I don't know much about how this person looks to then make sterotypical judgements. its all their thought

I think people would still insult face to face. people need to be mature, respectful, and willing to compromise (on things like speech, different wordings and misunderstood phrases can cause wars)

Sometimes I would. But sometimes I'm really shocked at the vehemence of the responses on this forum, and think that I would probably shy away from the discussion in a real-world setting.

It would be interesting yes. I would actually find it easier discussing face to face rather than via typing. I'm not keen on alot of typing and prefer verbal conversation.

Actually, I'm afraid that some of the more extreme people might become physically violent with a Wiccan in the room who is opinionated and not going to back down.

Seriously. It's a nice thought, but I would fear for my safety.

There is an element of confrontation in witnessing about salvation in Jesus Christ to those who haven't received him as their savior and who are disturbed by the light shining into the darkness in their souls.

people will still end up arguing only that some people might start throwing down and fight physically instead of verbally
