Fruits are the 'fruiting' part of the plant, in other words, the reproductive part that produces the seeds. Vegetables are the 'vegetative' part of the plant, so either the leaves, stems, or roots. FYI to the first poster: peanuts are fruits - legumes to be exact.

From a botanist's standpoint, anything with seeds is a fruit. However, the US Supreme Court, using different criteria, decreed the tomato to be a vegetable. I believe that their reasoning was that its use was more vegetable-like. Thus, if you put it on your dinner plate along with your meat and potatoes, it's a vegetable. If you have it for desert, it's a fruit. We won't get into pumpkin pie and my spicy tomato jam. Hey, this is the USA, where our-highly intellectual president Reagan opined that catsup was a vegetable.

Farmer: Fruit is basically the bright colored food, while vegetables are darker and duller in color.

Scientifically, a fruit contains seeds; watermelon, banana, orange, tomato, cucumber, peppers. And a vegatable does not; carrot, radish, potato, lettuce.
In common terminology, a fruit is sweet and associated with dessert and baking if cooked at all, and a veggie is associated with a main course and cooking if cooked at all.

In the superstore, fruits are usually chosen much too soon. Some are rocks, many are bitter. Some of the fresh vegetables are typical right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
