Females are usually more dominant than males but there are some males that are very territorial. If you are going to rescue, I would take your dog with you to meet the new potential friend to make sure they will get along. Male or female would be fine!

Remember that dogs are "pack" animals and there is ALWAYS an alpha member. If you get a male, neutered or not, then you could have problems with the establishment of the alpha role. That could still happen in less dramatic form with a female.
I would get a female because hopefully your male then sees her as no completition for the "boss of the house."
Remember your dog may get along with other dogs but that is usually in "neutral" terrritory like a dog park or the vet's office.
Good for you in taking in a rescue dog! Good luck!

Our second dog was a spayed female. Our first was a male and he started marking his territory the day she arrived. We had to use a cummerbun for a while and he still spots some times. I think it would be a stronger urge in him were our second a male.
Our two get along famously and play play play all day. Still, he marks sometimes. I use apple spray to repel but, hey, it's a deal either gender.

If it was me i would go ahead and get another male. He should be better off with a male in his territory. The females are the ones who are more protective of there terriotory.

I would get a female nuetered dog.He may want to fight a male. The male dogs are more apt to want to show each other who the alpha male is.Remember the dog will be coming to live in his domain.Get a female about the same size of him...good luck and thanks for saving a new dog...

try this because it is highly recommended to check on animal compatibility take you dog with you when you go to pick out your second dog and see how they get along a the shelter. If they get along well then I would get a male but if they seem not to get along well I would get a dam as she will have been spayed anyway.

If the dog was neutered early enough, a second neutered male wouldn't be a problem.

It depends on the breed. My Shiba's (and Akita's etc.) mostly just get along with dogs of the opp. sex but my female LOVES any kind of dog. I would judge by how you feel your dog would handle it. We dont know your dog.

He would probably get along better with a b*tch. Do you know the health benefits of spaying?
