He is telling me he needs to get around 100 grams of protein a day. He wants to drink protein drinks, but I don't think it is good for you. I would appreciate any advice on what to buy at the grocery store besides lean meats, eggs, and legumes. Opinions on protein powdre?
He rides around 10 hours a week if that helps. Sometimes more if our 2 year old will let him.

Based on what you've said, here's my advice: Buy healthy, fresh food, prepare balanced meals, cut out ALL processed sugar and junk-food carbs. Limit calories to whatever's healthy for his size. Increase riding DISTANCE -- so if he's currently covering 180 mi/week, he should target 200 next week. Keep ratcheting up the distance and let family time be incentive to cover it faster. Do NOT drink your protein: eat it. So much more satisfying and the calories will be more meaningful. The pounds will disappear all on their own.

I kinda agree. He should know what to do to shed the pounds as a Cat 1 racer. If he IS a pro, he should be riding 4-6 hours a DAY. At least that's how I think pros train. At least 20 hours a week. If he rode like that, and he knows this, the pounds will just disappear.
I don't have kids so I really don't know about the balance thing when it comes to jobs vs. family.
I think what you are getting him should be ok unless he wants different. Maybe try eating nuts and grains through out the day. High in protein, low in fat. A friend of mine is a tri-athlete and that's what he does. Just nibbles on fruits, veggies, nuts, granola....all day. Small amounts.
