You will need layers of clothing. The changes ARE that drastic, especially when you head north. The time you are travelling is spring in the southern parts of the country and heading into the monsoon in the tropical parts of the country.
You'll need
shorts
tshirts
jeans
sweater
light weight water proof coat
sandals/thongs
covered shoes
these things are the minimum outerwear I'd pack. I'd also suggest bug repellent and sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.
Have fun, it is a beautiful country.

It will be still quiet cool in the months that you are coming. Victoria will probably be freezing as will NSW. Depending on where you are going in QLD and NT the weather is usually quite nice all year round and can get chilly at night except if you are in the top end of Australia i.e Darwin, Cairns, Townsville where it is hot and humid all year. Perhaps you can work it so that the first part of your trip you go to the warmer climates and as the weeks go by go further south as it will have started to warm up but not be too hot. Definately when you are in the NT invest in a fly net as the flies almost carry you away. So you will probably get away with shorts and Tshirts but just make sure that you throw in a couple of Jumpers (sweaters) and probably a pair of jeans just in case you come across a couple of cooler days. Have Fun.

I won't add too much - everyone else had told you pretty much what you need to know.
Just remember that Australia is a BIG country. The difference in climat and weather is THAT drastic. September is spring but it can get very cold (up to November) down south and hot and humid up Queensland and NT and outback NSW. You can have the four seasons in one day in Melbourne - and this is NOT a joke! Be prepared! Do more research

Shorts and tshirts are always good, especially for the north. You're going there in spring, so the weather should be really nice, with mild temperatures in the south and quite warm up north. Just bring a light jacket and umbrella for rainy days (it can happen, especially in Victoria), and I'd take a sweater too if a chillier day comes your way. I'd also take jeans, they're ok for going out at night.
Hat and sunscreen a must, and also some insect repellent if you're hitting the outback.
As for shoes, unless you plan lots of trekking, regular tennis shoes will do, and obviously thongs (= flip flops)!
You'll love it there!

You won't need a rain coat. Bring a light jacket for Victoria or Melbourne but definitely shorts for the northern parts. Bring a hat and sunscreen and if you are planning to get out in the outback you might want to buy a fly net for your face when you get there.
You'll have a great time Australia is great. Been three times and even married an Aussie.

Torrid, after I fly, I generally bypass American or Canadian airways to la, then Qantas or United to Sydney. make positive your keep on has bare minimum so some distance as toiletries. i exploit the small tube of toothpaste, adequate for the flight. As for different stuff like shampoo and a like, i do not even difficulty to weigh my luggage down, i visit get all that stuff over there. it would want to pay you to have a small %. of wipes on your keep on. Nail clippers or the equipment, i'd propose you to %. that into your checked luggage. Please do not fall for an similar mistake, do no longer over %., Australian shops have a tremendous type of substances, and extremely cutting-part, and up with the developments. once you meet your associates in Sydney, they ought to take you to at least one in all those Westfield procuring centers, one which includes recommendations is Westfields Parramatta, there is yet another position referred to as Roselands, wonderful places to purchase. Melbourne has similar procuring centers.
