I am not ashamed to admit that yes I did take antidepressants for many years! I am now off of them and doing wonderful. Medications along with talk therapy and group therapy even hospitalizations a few times saved my life. This is nothing to be ashamed of.I highly recommend getting help when needed and I also let people know that depression need not last forever and taking medications doesn't always have to last forever. There are mental disorders however that do require meds for life such as bipolar and schizophrenic patients, As these are serious chemical imbalances!

I do. I have major depression and anxiety disorder and am in the middle of a divorce. I have taken medications since I was much younger for the panic and anxiety, though not all the time. The medications do not cure my problems or make all the anxiety go away, but they give me room to work on things that are bothering me. I am lucky in that I responded well to the medications, not everyone does, and had very few side effects.

I also have been in therapy and I teach Cognitive Behavioral techniques to others. MG

the people with mental illness are. it seems and from my experience it is that doctors prescribe medication even if they cant figure out whats wrong. their idea is that medication works
but in reality medication only fixes problems that doctors can see with their own two eyes and in my case only when doctors are
present. i have voluntarily admitted myself to phsyc clinics before
with the intention of not being on medication yet having assistance around me for withdrawal. the doctors would not allow this i was repeatedly asked to go back on medication, they would not take no for an answer. its like when you want someone to do something for you all you have to do is keep asking usually they do it to stop being pestered to do it - but doctors don't do this they really dont take no for an answer its a one way decision doctors know that people on incapacitating medication will go back on meds if repeatedly asked, even though you're trying to fix it. the effects of medication and the one way attitude of doctors have outweighed every positive thing about being on meds. medication has caused me another mental illness on top of the one i've already got only you cant forget the effects of medication whereas you can forget that you have a naturally occurring mental illness, this medication (and i know all of medications do it) has retarded me simply by making every thought, feeling, outcome, freedom, attitude so weighed down by causing an unnaturally heavy sleep. hell i go to sleep after 10 years of being on medication and i sleep atleast 12 hours, the worst its ever gotten is a full 24 hour day and the part that pisses me off is for years i havent been able to remember to do something that ive tried to remember before sleep. because of medication i lost my life. i hate doctors.

I don't. I drink a V8 once in awhile. If I'm really depressed, then I eat a little rocky road ice cream. No meds though. Though, according to Chappelle, cocaine is a hell of a drug.

no. i've taken xanax before, & take it sparingly, but it just makes me sleepy & unmotivated to do anything. meds can be helpful, i'm not saying they're not effective. i personally just don't like to take them. i wouldn't suggest them for longterm use.

Maybe not, but it seems like a lot of people here recommend them or recommend seeing a therapist. I tell you what, if I were younger, I'd go back to school to be a psychiatrist or a pharmacist. They must be making LOADS of money right now.
