In their twisted world, not being muslim is a reason for killing everyone who is not Muslim, but they still need a rationale for killing each other. So they say "Ahmed isn't the right kind of muslim, so I cut his head off and sent the video to Al Jazeera."

The Sunnis and the Shiites have differences on points of their religiion going back to the beginning of Islam. Religion is a major factor in a people's social identity. Differences in group identity is a cause of conflict (this is basic group dynamics)... The reason they seem to be in such heated conflict at this time in history is because power is shifting around who controlls the energy sources (oil). This is made worse by the interference of western powers, who also want some control over the oil.

Sunnis are more traditional and believe only Allah should be prayed to while the other prays to famous Muslims kind of like Catholics do to saints. Among the Sunni, this is a major blasphemy. That is one fundalmental difference, there are others. Usually these are the excuses but the real reasons are because of power and control.

It began when Mohammed died. Shities believed only descendants of Mohammed should be caliph--or the one in charge. Sunnis believed the most qualifed should be caliph--that it should not be hereditary. I'm not sure if that is the big issue now, but it was for many centuries.

For the same kinds of reasons that different Christian sects don't think the others are "real".

Think of Ireland to see the similarities.
