The minimum ice thickness is about 6 inches to walk on, If you want to ride an ATV out on the ice the minimum is 18 inches, for a car it is 3 feet or thicker.
I have fallen through on our lake before, it was thick enough but I accidentally walked over a beaver run(that is where the beavers chew the ice thin), so be extremely cautious!!!!!

Most big lakes will have postings or you will see others on it. There is also a time when it has been cold for so long that it is just general knowledge that the likes will be frozen over enough; this is when the ice fishers drive their cars onto the lakes. Be careful, no matter what you do.

It depends on the lake's depth. Generally, it should be at least one foot thick before walking on it. Two feet thick is, for obvious reasons, better.
