In the first cycle of McDonaldland commercials beginning in 1971, Grimace was the "Evil Grimace", with two pairs of arms with which to steal milkshakes. After that first campaign, the character was revised to be one of the "good guys", and his number of arms was reduced to two.

Originally Grimace was evil and known as The Evil Grimace. He also had four arms at that time. Not long after his creation, they made him a good guy and gave him only two arms. He was created in the early 70s around the same time as Mayor McCheese, Big Mac, Hamburgaler, The Professor, and of course that crappy pirate. None of them are around anymore, sometimes the Fry Guys (who were originally called Goblins), The Hamburgagler (who used to be a middle aged creppy looking man), and Birdie show up. Grimace also had an Irish uncle that would pop up occasionally, usually around St. Patty's day.
