It has introduced uniformity.

The upside is, (almost) everyone's computer files and work works on anybody else's computer.

The downside is, in the words of a famous carmaker, you can have any color you like, as long as its black.

There's a book out called "The world is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. In it he talks about how certain technological advances have made it easier for anybody in the world to compete in business.

I'm not really plugging the book since I got tired of how self important the author was. But he makes a fairly good argument. The problem I had with the book was he could have made the same argument in a book 10% as long.

Anyway, what he means by a flat world is a level playing field. And he cites Microsoft's ubiquitous software as something that levels the playing field because it is available relatively cheaply to ANYone and allows for streamlined interbusiness comunications.
