I live in VA. and I am planning on getting my learner's permit soon. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if you have to pay extra for insurance if you have a learner's permit?

Just wondering because if I do, I need to get a job so I can pay it or else my grandmother will flip out.

Thanks!

Your grandmother will have to add you to her insurance, and the rate will increase. Getting a job to help pay for it is a great idea. That shows responsibility, which your Grandmother has likely been trying hard to instill in you. Looks like she is doing a good job, and you are getting a new job.

Good luck with it, and be careful out there.

In VA, as in any other state, insurance goes with the vehicle, not with the driver. Do you live in the same household as your grandmother? If so, you will definitely have to be added to her insurance coverage. If not, and you are driving with her permission, you would be covered.

She should probably call her insurance company anyway, even if you don't live at her address, and ask about it. There is a chance her insurance will go up, but I'm sure you would get a job and pay the extra, wouldn't you? Good practice for the bill you will have once you get your license and your own car.

Good luck.

If you are living in your grandmother's household she will need to add you to the policy before you drive the car. Her rates will go up, possibly significantly.
