Why can the human body overcome some viruses like the common cold but not others like HIV, Herpes?

I do not have any viruses and just want to know how the body is able to defeat some viruses but not others.

There is a theory that the descendants of these survivors who are living today in the age of HIV, etc., are the people today who have been found to resist certain diseases.

It may have something to do with a gene mutation that has somehow strengthened their immune system.

Remember, this is just a theory.

Onces with weaker and less complex structures like the flu virus are easier. Remember however that only a century or so ago people died with flu very easily.
