lime neutralizes overly acidic soils. if you use too much it can cause the soil to become overly alkaline.Slaked lime is the common term for Calcium Hydroxide.

It is mainly used to reduce the acidity like you said. If you use too much you can overshoot the mark and make it alkali.

Slaked lime is the alkali Calcium Hydroxide. Its how Nair works.
