My hair used to be black, but now it's a chestnut brown... my hairdresser said that it could be exposure to sun, or the shampoo that i'm using. i use herbal essences, and i have never had a problem with it... what's wrong? and is there a way to make it back into black without dyeing it?

Herbal Essence is very high on the pH scale (alkaline) it is simply stripping your color! This happens with many shampoo's! Try using a color shampoo (ex: Biolage, TIGI Fashionista, Kenra, etc)! I would recommend using a semi-permanent dye to refresh your color (Id recommend having a stylist give you the retouch so you arent mixing color lines)... Then see your stylist and ask if her salon has color depositing shampoo's available! Some salons will mix up a color shampoo formulation (at an extra cost) to help maintain your color! My favorite color depositing shampoo line is Artec (available in salons)! Basically it deposits color into your hair (no major change) it just helps maintain the tonailty and vibrance of your color! Sun, Smoke, Pollution, Weather, etc effect the longevity of your haircolor! Go to your stylist and ask her for a semi permanent color! It is lower on the pH scale (acid) and better for your hair then pulling permanent through from scalp to ends! Also Back To Basics has a sun screen protectant spray called Marine!

DO NOT use Henna because if you mess up the color and want a corrective color from a professional they wont touch your hair! Henna is a metallic dye while professional color lines are Alkaline... The two mixed together cause a chemical reaction! Do Not use Koolaid that is tacky and trashy and uneffective... It is a stain, not good for your hair, and most of all not effective! Also not alot of the over the counter hair colors (ex: Herbal Essence) are Metallic as well! Stay away from color lines that are a metallic dye compound!

Try using tinted shampoos, like aveda or koolaid or black wine or how about a natural dye like henna?
Tips:
Avoid: Any alcohol based products such as hairspray, gel, shampoo with alcohol, mouse, lifting serums, or tonics, etc.
Keep hair away from face where you may wear makeup or acne products and perfumes and sprays, soaps, bleaches, toothpaste, etc.
Also, get haircuts so your hair doesn't get dried out which causes your roots to break and the shafts to split and the cuticles to dry and lighten and therefor to soak up any color that comes into contact with it..
You might consider going to your stylist and getting a GLOSS which would neutralize the color and might darken it...

no, you can't get it back to black without dying it. if you don't want to damage it again with permanent color, you could use a semi-permanent hair color instead. in the future, if you want to keep your black hair black, buy shampoo, conditioner and styling products for color treated hair that include protection from uv rays or just wear a hat if you know you're going to be outside for a long period of time.

mine does the same thing, especially in the summer beacuse of so much exposure to the sun. i had to dye mine back to black, but theres a uv protection hair spray that helps your hair to not get lighter, kind of like sunblock but the opposite, but that wont make it go back any darker

Allot of people do not know that you need to use sun protection on their hair. Your hair suffers the same damages as your skin
