Atheists are perfectly free to run for office and compete for votes; the kicker is that since the vast majority of the voting public are adherents of any of several religious beliefs which guide their decision-making processes, including how they vote, a professing atheist is not likely to get the support of more than a few misguided voters. But there are no religious tests for holding office, because the Constitution explicitly prohibits them; thus no legal barriers for politically ambitious atheists.

I think they are more afraid that the Atheist would propose some nonsensical policy or program that is offensive or damaging to religion in the US. However, since most beliefs and opinions about Atheists are typically stereotypes or misconceptions, there's no evidence that an Atheist couldn't do as good a job as the "religious" people currently in office.

I think the majority of religious voters would be concerned that an atheist might not look after their interests--i.e., would try to push forward an agenda that limits their right to practice their religions as they please. This would almost certainly be unfounded, of course, as most atheists understand and value religious freedom, but that would be the fear. JFK faced the same kind of fear when he ran for president. Some non-Catholics were afraid that he would take his instructions from the Pope and try to steer the country toward Catholicism, limiting the freedoms of non-Catholics. That fear, too, turned out to be unfounded.

Whether or not I would vote for them would depend on the atheist in question. If, after looking at their platform and their past history as a politician, I concluded they were a lying amoral weasel, then I would not vote for them. If I saw that they had good ideas, and were making a sincere effort to help this country, then I would most likely vote for them.

No matter who is in office.. They would still be imperfect humans and will still be part of the political system that the Bible clearly says is under the control of Satan.
"Every civilization that has ever existed has ultimately collapsed. History is a tale of efforts that failed,or aspirations that weren't realized...So,as a historian, one has to live with a sense of the inevitability of tragedy,"-Henry Kissinger, political scientist and professor of government,as quoted in The New York Times, Oct.13 1974,p.30b
My point being that religious or not it to me wouldn't make one difference.. Eccl. 8:9: Man has dominated man to his injury
(It does not say a religious man or an Atheist..)

Isn't it funny the founders of this greatest country were majority God-fearing gentlemen? What I would be concerned of is that this freedom of rights US might become Socialist. Also is there a law that says athiests are not allowed to run or is it they can't get the votes?

"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma." Joseph Lewis quoting Lincoln in a 1924 speech in New York
Seems that the Christians allowed a few of those horrible, immoral atheists and agnostics to slip into office...

Quite the opposite. Religious people are complete bigots who beleive that Atheists are without God and therefore would make terrible decisions based upon their own lack of morals and personal greed - because we all know how Atheists are equal to Satanists (in the eyes of a religious retard anyway.)

I suspect that they'd be more afraid they'd have no morals.
I'm not a christian, but I base my answer on how many times we've seen the question "if you don't believe in god, what stops you from killing people?" etc.
