well in the same sense why is a driveway called a drive way and you park in it. and a parkway is called a parkway and you drive on it. There is really no right answer. I think it was some guy or gal bored sitting in there house that came up with it. No one can ever explain somethings.

because backyard is seldom seen because it is at the back. you have to put a front in the front yard because it it the one being
seen by the passers by

i dont know, i would never use the word yard, except the measurement, i'd say back garden or front garden :S
