Thanks for the help. I ended up with the Kodak c743, so far , 2 hours into having it, it's easy for a first timer.

I cannot tell you specifics for the Pentax as I don't have one. Our family has two different models of Canon Powershot series...one uses two AAs and the other four AAs. But I think the info I provide below applies to most digital cameras.

Battery duration varies depending on age and quality of the battery, and how you use the camera.

If you are always using the viewer and looking over existing stored images, and leave the camera on until the auto-shutoff, your batteries are likely to drain faster than if you leave the LCD screen turned off, and shut off the camera when it is no longer required.

I use rechargable batteries, and keep a spare set of batteries in the camera bag. When the camera indicates BAT LOW I just swap to the other set. I can usually go through an entire birthday party, a sporting event, or a wedding ceremony without having to change if I started with fresh batteries. That means at least 70-100 pictures, and erasing or reviewing some in between.

As for not having the SD card (or compact flash or whatever other card) in the camera, my understanding is that the camera will not work. The camera needs the SD card to use as its storage, and I don't believe any cameras have a built-in memory card to store anything. Most of them are supplied with a 16MB demo card for you to use, which will hold very few pictures...like 6-10 if you are not set to use highest quality.
