I just read this article:

http://news.yahoo.com/fc/world/afghanistan

Where are we getting all these extra troops from? First Baghdad now possibly Afghanistan. Why do we continue to add more troops when the majority of the American people are against it?

Also do you think that Iran will perceive this as more of a threat?

Good answers to all. I agree that the public or the media especially shouldn't have the say so that our military commanders do. A lot of people really do turn a blind eye.

You know, I'm not sure I've heard people protesting against Afghanistan as much as Iraq. However, the media has a large role to play in the perspective of the American people and how they respond to this war.

The American people should want to win. Not give up.

I know there will be an increase in troop levels in Afghanistan but that will come from NATO and not just the US. This will show the world what kind of commitment the Euros have to the conflict.

That is what the leading commander on the ground wants. I will trust his judgment.

I don't know the exact numbers, but there is something like 130,000+ troops in Iraq and 24,000 in Afghanistan. So that leaves over a million not in these places.

It is because the majority of American people aren't qualified to make that kind of assement. Why does it matter if some soccer mom doesn't want more troops in Iraq?(Do you see where I'm going with this?)

Afghanistan was and still is a confirmed centre for terrorist activity, I'm a soldier and I think Afghanistan would be a better call than Iraq. Afghanistan continually harbours terrorist cells from pakistan, and all places of the middle east and even beyond. Afghanistan is a good investment for the American government and will definately make an impact on the world.

Majority of Americans know zip about the military and what is required.

I leave that to those who have a better picture of what is going on than us. Considering our media outlets we don't have clue what is happening in Iraq. (That comes from the troops there I have talk to)

Please remember the liberals prior to this were all in favor of sending more troops but now against it.

You do the right thing first and don't depend on the majority to be your moral compass. That is a Bill Clinton idea.

From what I understand, Bush re deployed troops from Afghanistan to to Iraq to make up for part of his 21,500. And since the military is suddenly asking for more troops for Afghanistan, then it must be true. Funny, if Bush had just "stayed the course" in Afghanistan in the first place, we wouldn't need to send more troops there, would we?

The american people have no stomach for war so they turn a blind eye on the situations overseas. Until they are affected directly, like another 9-11, people will be against any increase in the war on terrorism.

It amazes me how many of us are so war-hungry. Hilary seems to think we should "send more troops to Afghanistan" per an article I read yesterday. But then Hilary has to stay on the side of Bush because she is a candidate for the presidency(even if she is denying it). I believe the majoriity of those in the U.S. are against MORE war-mongering, not so much deploying troops all over the place while we can't even keep a lid on illegals here in this country.

Im going to attempt to chorus from calling names or belittling your intelligence. initially we are no longer 'Attacking' Afghanistan, in case you've faith this then you definately do not understand what conflict we are struggling with. we are struggling with the conflict on Terror. As in a conflict adverse to Terrorist, no longer a rustic. Afghanistan's authorities got here about to be overthrown by technique of the Taliban regime in basic terms many years earlier to the 11th of September, 2001 attacks the position we lost an envisioned 3,000 human beings. We invaded Afghanistan to disencumber them from the Taliban regime, yet we are no longer struggling with Afghanistan. you're perfect on your fact that we were by no ability attacked by technique of Afghanistan, no longer interior an same which ability as we were attacked by technique of the jap in WWII. we are in Afghanistan to disencumber them from the terrorist. the reason we've not left is because there are preparation camps in Pakistan and clean combatants are flowing over the border to Afghanistan and are causing further and extra casualties between no longer in common words U.S. Serviceman's yet also community civilians.

"Why do we continue to add more troops when the majority of the American people are against it?"

Because the media convinces people its not worth it. The average citizen does nothing to help the war on terror, so just ignore them. Whether the people support the war doesn't impact if we win or not that much, unless they complain to the tipping point that our leaders back out (like Vietnam).

NATO is in charge of Afghanistan now, so not all of the soldiers are coming from the US.

The American people do not run their own Government, they are brainwashed in to thinking that they have a say in it, but they really don't. You have to be a millionaire to run for president and there are so many interest groups funding people that even your voting choices are corrupted. The Government is committed to it's self preservation and protected by the military, it's goal driven by the all mighty corporate dollar.
