I'm really curious about what these things were. In any one tree, there might be 10 of these cobweb looking spun things with thing inside-some looked like the shape of a sleeping rat or rodent. I was there in august-eastern maine by canada. does anyone know what they could be? thanks.

BTW, Monarchs DO NOT make webs at any time.

They could be monarch butterfly webs, or webs of some other insect. They lay their eggs in them so they're protected. Then when the eggs hatch, there are plenty of leaves for the larvae to eat.
