If you are talking about manned aircrafts the fastest operational aircraft that have flown within the earth's atmospheere is SR-71. It reaches the speed over Mach 3.2 at the max altitude 85,000 ft +. There is a prototype X-15 with speed Mach 6.72 at the altitude 354,200 feet. If you want to know about the unmanned aircrafts there is one that surpassed X-15 and SR-71 its X-43 at speed Mach 9.8 and max altitude110,000 feet.

The SR-71 is the fastest KNOWN aircraft, the X-15 is a manned rocket. The reason I say known aircraft is that a black account named "Aurora" showed up right about the same time the SR-71 was taken out of service.
Fun fact: The SR-71 had a predecessor called the YF-12A designed to be an interceptor. The cia crashed them all, oops! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-12_OXCART the photo here was taken at "Area 51"aka groom lake in 1964. the base officialy did not exist untill, sigh, 1997. damn the world is getting so boring.

That is the space shuttle, it is classified as an aircraft and while in orbit it can exceed 16,000mph.
Or, like most other said, it would be the SR-71 blackbird who's top speed is still classified. Their pilots were considered astronauts As well because of the altitudes they flew at.

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
The SR-71 officially set the air speed record on July 28, 1976 when it set a two way average speed of 2193 mph around a closed course in California.
Only the experimental X-15 surpasses the SR-71 for the outright records at Mach 6.72.

It used to be the SR-71. I don't know what it is now that the Blackbird is is no longer in service.
Sorry JD the Space Shuttle doesn't qualify. It doesn't fly. It gets into space by lighting it's butt on fire and gets back with glide characteristics only slightly better than a brick. It is fast though. I will give it that.
