I have a AMD 64 Dual Core processor, 2Gb RAM and a good graphics card and mainly use my computer for gaming - both online and not, viewing movies and downloading pictures.

I'm just thinking of upgrading to Vista as I have heard it is the first 64 bit OS so I'm thinking I'll get the best out of my processor?

Hope you all can help

best bet is to stick with xp for now and wait it out. Anything that has a new release is going to have bugs. Give it some time and see what flaws start popping up. This will give them time to work on those while most companies are still getting drivers ready.

XP Pro is still the best to use. Vista still doesn't have all drivers out for it yet, and personally I don't like it right now.

Reason being:
I can't right-click on anything in the start button in order to get the path.. I hate that.
Since I need to do that all the time in order to get a path of a program, after installing it, so that I can get the cracked file to that directory in order to crack the proggie, then that was a real deal-breaker for me. I just reloaded XP.

Otherwise I heard that games and everything run much smoother in vista.

I use a slimmed-down version of XP. It is void of a lot of things that are unnecessary in XP. It loads up and reboots *very* fast. It's only 180megs. Until Vista is "cured" of all the microsoft crap in it that slow it down and are worthless to have, as a game that I am, then I'll just wait for that. XP will function just fine for everything for at least another year or longer.

Don't waste your time unless you're just curious, have time to spare, or an extra box to play with.

Actually, that's a good idea.. I think I'll set up my other box with Vista Ultimate, and do the time crack on it.

I've been using Vista (64 & 32) Ultimate on my home PC for 2 months now. I have a PC similar to yours.

Vista 64 bit offers a HUGE increase in speed & security. I have both 64 & 32 bit in a dual boot configuartion & I see the difference first hand.

Besides that ... Vista is to XP Pro what Win95 was to Win3.1 ... it's not just another GUI with a few extra features ... it is an entirely different animal altogether ....

... I'm hooked ... I would not go back to XP if you paid me to.

Not all 64 bit drivers are yet available for third party devices. Legacy hardware drivers are included in Vista.

My Nvidia card & Realtech audio & Hauppauge capture card were all detected & properly installed by Vista with no user input whatsoever... modem & wireless keyboard /mouse as well.

Most people are overlooking the fact that the Operating System itself is manipulating large pieces of system data all the time. You do not need to be running 64 bit programs in order to feel the advantage.... the OS is a 64 bit program (duh ...)

The increase of 64bit over 32bit is DRAMATIC !

IE is phenominally faster ... PC shutdown / restart takes about 3 seconds...all my 32bit programs work fine on it.
16bit programs will not work on Vista 64.

Go for it !!!!!

Philip T

Windows vista should be a good operating system They did steal a few items from apples operating system. But overall it should be good. I would wait a few months to upgrade to windows vista untill all the manufactors have there drivers in place and Microsoft works a few of the bugs out of it. I would personally stay with windows XP right now. It works just fine and is not broken

I would stick with XP Pro.

Operating systems when they first come out are nothing but trouble, and Vista already has a bad track record. Give it six months and by then maybe Microsoft will have some of the bugs figured out, plus there will be more drivers and software available for it.

64 bit PCs don't perform that much better than 32 bit, unless everything you do involves large amounts of data. I would stick with XP Pro, there is a 64 bit version of that, isn't there? Vista won't become a standard for another 2-3 years.

Personally, I am in no great hurry to upgrade from XP to Vista, unless the reviews are phenomenally good and even then not until Service Pack 1 has been released. And even then, I might still keep XP on a separate partition.

Don't be an early adopter, as they would call you. Especially for a Microsoft product (much less a whole Operating System!)

Stick with XP until most of your peers have Vista. I know of several products that won't run on Vista right now.

keep on with the XP professional for now. Vista continues to be kinda buggy and has its share of issues. to boot being buggy, Vista is a RAM hog. it kind of feels that you in reality have 1GB of RAM and also you equipment will be a lot slower operating Vista. I actually have 2GB of RAM and am operating Vista....it truly is really sluggish. i'm switching back to XP for %...and till they restoration all the insects. Vista is compared to minded with many hardware and software factors. in case you opt for to % up your pc, upload extra RAM. have self assurance me, do not attempt to run Vista with the RAM on your equipment.

You will notice very little performance boost and will likely encounter all manner of problems with device drivers and 32 bit applications. If you enjoy being on the bleeding edge (and pulling your hair out) then by all means upgrade.

Otherwise, I'd wait a year or two for Microsoft to work out the bugs and all the hardware manufacturers to put out stable device drivers.
